Our Team

Gillian Johnston, Owner and Physiotherapist

Gillian Johnston graduated from McMaster University in 2003 with an Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology. In 2005, she earned a Masters of Science in Physiotherapy. Over the past 19 years, Gillian has worked with a variety of ortho and neuro patient presentations in outpatient, inpatient, private clinic and home-based settings. Gillian is also a passionate and hands-on educator. She is the founder of MAP Rehab Inc. and has been providing clinical teaching to U of T, McMaster, Western and Queens students since 2006. Gillian is deeply committed to education. She received the Clinical Excellence Award from the University Health Network for innovative teaching in 2016, and continues to receive yearly Clinical Educator Recognition awards. Gillian has provided academic teaching through small group facilitation with OT, PT, and Medical Students, and as an Anatomy Instructor at the National Ballet School’s Teacher Training Program. She continues to be an enthusiastic mentor to many students and newly graduated clinicians. As a leading clinician and educator in her field, Gillian is dedicated to providing hands-on, in-person, small group, clinical teaching while also working in hospital (Lyndhurst-UHN) and community settings as a passionate physiotherapist. 


Marissa Taylor, Physiotherapist and Practice Manager

Marissa graduated from McMaster University’s Masters in Science-Physiotherapy program in 2015.  Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) in 2012 and Masters in Science - Rehabilitation Sciences in 2013 at McMaster University. Marissa’s career began embedded in the research world.  As a graduate student at McMaster University, she focused on applications of patient-centred care in improving healthcare outcomes.  As a research student at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, she assisted in the development of a research ethics protocol for involving children in research studies.  In total, Marissa has published seven  peer reviewed journal articles in the field of rehabilitation science.  Marissa’s interests transitioned to clinical practice when she joined the rehabilitation team at Lyndhurst Centre in 2015.  Here, she applies critical reasoning to her patient-centered approach to treating inpatient populations with spinal cord injuries. In addition to her clinical practice, Marissa has an interest in education.  She has successfully completed several Advanced Bobath Courses. She is a Lecturer (status only) with the University of Toronto, and she teaches anatomy at the National Ballet School of Canada. Marissa joined MAP Rehab Inc. in 2022.

Caitlyn graduated from McMaster University with her BSc.Kin. During her time at McMaster, Caitlyn was a student researcher with both the Mac-Wheelers program and the multiple sclerosis physical activity study which sparked her interest in working with individuals with neurological conditions.

Caitlyn graduated from McMaster University with her BSc.Kin. During her time at McMaster, Caitlyn was a student researcher with both the Mac-Wheelers program and the multiple sclerosis physical activity study which sparked her interest in working with individuals with neurological conditions. 

Caitlyn went on the pursue her Masters of Physical Therapy from Queens University. After graduating, she began her career in an outpatient setting working with people who have orthopaedic and neurological conditions. She then transitioned into an inpatient setting at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital on the integrated stroke rehabilitation unit. Caitlyn continued her passion for learning by taking courses focused on treating individuals with both brain and spinal cord injuries to better serve her patients. She currently also works at Lyndhurst as an inpatient physiotherapist in spinal cord injury rehabilitation! 

When Caitlyn’s not busy being a physiotherapist you can find her on the ski slopes or off on a good hike!

Nicole is a Masters of Physical Therapy graduate from University of Toronto in 2021. Prior to her physiotherapy degree, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science, and a Masters of Human Health and Nutritional Science,  at the University of Guelph. 

Nicole works in both an inpatient rehabilitation and private home care settings, primarily working with populations with neurological conditions. Nicole focuses on movement and posture analysis to guide her treatments. One of her strengths surround building a strong therapeutic relationship with her clients. 

In her free time, she is often playing volleyball with friends or visiting with family.

Simone graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master’s of Science in Physiotherapy. Prior to this, Simone completed a Bachelor of Human Kinetics and a Master’s of Science Program at the University of Guelph in the field of Neurophysiology and Biomechanics. Her thesis work focused on skin sensory stimulation to improve performance

Simone graduated from the University of Toronto with a Master’s of Science in Physiotherapy. Prior to this, Simone completed a Bachelor of Human Kinetics and a Master’s of Science Program at the University of Guelph in the field of Neurophysiology and Biomechanics. Her thesis work focused on skin sensory stimulation to improve performance during strength tasks. Other research studies she has worked on look to map out sensory receptors on the lower extremities, with the long-term goal of augmenting sensory information to improve function.

In addition to her neurological experience, Simone worked with the Guelph Gryphons football team as a student trainer throughout her undergraduate degree. She also has experience as a medical assisted in the cardiac rehabilitation program at the Ontario Aerobics Centre.

In addition to Mapclass, Simone works with inpatient spinal cord injury rehabilitation at the Lyndhurst Centre where she works with patients with a variety of neurological conditions including stroke, MS, Parkinson’s disease and spinal cord injuries. Since graduating, she has continued her education through the following courses: Basic and Advanced Bobath courses for assessment and treatment of adults with neurological conditions, evidence based therapeutic taping, MAPClass, wheelchair skills course, pelvic floor and postural control in the neurologic patient.

Her interest in neurological rehabilitation started in undergrad when she had the opportunity to volunteer at the Movement Disorders Clinic at the Montreal

Joyce graduated with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Toronto after completing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Life Sciences at McGill University. Her interest in neurological rehabilitation started in undergrad when she had the opportunity to volunteer at the Movement Disorders Clinic at the Montreal Neurological Institute.  During her internships, Joyce also developed a passion for vestibular and concussion rehab and is actively working towards furthering her education in this field. 

While at McGill, Joyce worked as a research assistant and contributed to clinical studies investigating the impact of mindfulness-based interventions on individuals with late-life depression and anxiety. She remains committed to supporting research and using evidence-based interventions in her practice.

Throughout her career as a Physiotherapist, she has focused on working with adults and children with neurological injuries. Specific to pediatrics, she has worked in a variety of settings including neurological-outpatient rehabilitation, children's treatment centers, school care, home & community care and private practice. Her post-graduate training  includes courses and certifications in NDT-Bobath therapy, brain injury treatment and rehabilitation, complex orthopedic and chronic pain management, Cuevas-Medek Exercises (CME Level 1), management of orthopedic concerns in children with cerebral palsy, and gross motor skill development. She is also an Authorizer for the Ontario Assistance Devices Program (ADP) for mobility aids and pediatric standing frames. Her passion for working with persons with neurological injury has led her to a variety of other roles including clinic management, mentorship & teaching. Phil is an RMT graduate from Sutherland Chan in 2015. Prior to completing his massage schooling, he completed his BSc in Kinesiology at York University.  Phil has continued to increase his knowledge base by completing courses in Neurofunctional Acupuncture, sports acupuncture, and  the Advanced Neurofunctional Sports Performance Program at McMaster University, Fascial Stretch Therapy (level 2 FST), cupping, as well as various assessment courses. 

Phil has worked in a variety of settings such as Neuro clinics, multidisciplinary clinics, gyms and with national and professional level athletes in various sports. His academic background mixed with his various work settings and populations gives Phil a very holistic approach to rehabilitating the body focusing not just on the physical injury or problem itself, but looking at lifestyle, sleep, nutrition and mindset to help maximize the treatment outcomes. Having been injured many times in the past, he knows the importance of a holistic approach first hand and the benefits it provides. 

In his free time, he loves to play sports, primarily mountain biking and cycling, rugby and pickup basketball, scuba dive and free dive. Travel is also a major part of his life and he is always looking for an off the beaten path place to visit and explore.

The MiniMAPclass focuses on the Practical Application of Behaviour Analysis in Pediatric Physiotherapy, providing a framework to enhance outcomes.  In this small-group, hands-on learning environment, you'll benefit from the expertise of an experienced Pediatric Physiotherapist (Janna Marvyn) and Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (Kurtis Marvyn) to hone your pediatric assessment and treatment skills!  This course will feature postural/movement analysis for static positions, transitional movements and functional strengthening activities, and will provide guidance on handling & facilitation. This material is complimented by the description and practical application of behavioural strategies. Specific examples of how these strategies can influence and enhance your assessment and treatment sessions will be provided. The skills learned and practiced in miniMAP can be applied to a variety of patient populations and abilities. 

MiniMAPClass Course Certification

Level 1:  1/2 DAY  Introduction to miniMAP framework and the application to the pediatric population. Guided hands-on postural analysis, demonstration and practice. Introduction to behavioural strategies and direct applications to assessment and treatment sessions.

Level 2:  1/2 DAY (pre-requisite - Level 1 or instructor clearance). Honing of miniMAP skills including more complex and abnormal movement patterns. Instructor demonstration and hands-on practice is emphasized in this course. More complex behavioural topics will be explored including understanding the "why" of behaviour, trauma-informed care, and safety & client advocacy when observing challenging behaviours. 

MAP: APPLIED IN PRACTICE COURSE
